The acting-prime Minister, the Hon. James Carroll, accompanied by Mrs Carroll, and Mr \Y. G. Gordon, private secretary, left for AYairoa at about 11 o’clock yesterday morning. The party halted at AVliarerata for the night, and reach Morere to-dav, where the ceremony of opening the new bridge at Stewart’s Crossing will take place at 2.30 p.m. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs AY. D. Lysnar) left an Thursday evening to attend the ceremony, and Messrs P. Sheridan and P. McLaughlin (contractor for the bridge) followed later in the day. . He had already seen somo of the Tiiuroto settlers on the subject, and on his return to Wellington would go into tlie the matter with the Department, and do what lie could to retain it ter the settlers interested.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) AVHARERATA, August 20. The Acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. James Carroll, left for Alorere, on route to Wellington, this morning, intending to open the bridge at Stewart s Crossing during the trip. Mr. and • frs. Muriwai was reached in time for luncheon, and the party went onto AVlmrerata, where they arc to stay to-night. At Wharerata they met the Mayor and Mayoress of .Gisborne (Mr. and Airs. W " I). Lysnar), who had left Gisborne on' Thursday and had stayed for the night at Muriwai. BIRTHDAY CONGRATULATIONS. ■ Mr. Carroll, on Ills arrival at Whare* rata, received a large batch of tele* grams, wishing him many happy returns of the day, his fifty-second birthday. Among these congratulatory messages were two yery kindly worded ones sent respectively by Mr. W. H• Merries, M.P. »for Tauranga, and, Mr. . .Wander, M.P. for Marsden. A DEPUTATION. The Acting-Premier received a deputation at Wharerata from the AVhare-on"a-onga Maoris, headed by their chief, Mr. Te Wliat u.' The purpose of the deputation was to request the Minister to use his influence to have about a mile and a-quarter of road formed to the harbor at Whareonga-onga, in order that wool from that district may be shipped direct, instead of being carted all the way to Gisborne. The deputation stated that the pakeba owners of tlie land in the district were also desirous of the road being formed.Mr Carroll expressed his sympathy with the object of the deputation, and said that he would do liis best to have the road formed. He pointed out that it had been already surveyed. The ceremony of opening the bbewart’s Crossing bridge is to take place to-morrow (Saturday), at 2.30 p.m. A banquet is to be held in the evening. Mrs. Lysnar will remain at Wharerata, and will net go on to Morere.
