THE VOLUNTEERS.

HURUMUA MOUNTED RIFLES. (From Our Correspondent.) The Tinroto troop of the Huruniua Mounted Rifles x turned out in full strength on Saturday, August 14th, when a parade and shooting match was held, the competition being for the silver shield, with cash prize money and a gold medal presented by ' Lieutenant Small for competition, the greatest number of bulls-eyes put on. at.200-and 500 yards, the highest number out of three matches to count.\ Rain fell almost all day, and spoilt the shooting. The total number on parade numbered 15. There was not a single absentee. Sergeant Sutherland, Trooper T. W. Mossman, and Sergeant Senton were the leading men in scores for 'the day, while Sergeant Sutherland led off for the medal with a lead of one bulls-eye, with Trooper Mossman as runner-up. At the conclusion of the parade Lieutenant Small said he had, on behalf of the officer commanding the squadron, Captain Bax, to present Sergeant AV. Senton with his sergeant’s certificate, which he had secured at the examination held during the camp of the East Coast Mounted Rifles. It was a record event to have a parade without a single absentee. The parades of the troop during' the year so far have been very satisfactory, and the object of keeping good men together was only obtained by passing out the “wasters,” who were of no use to any squadron, and very little to themselves. Two new men had joined that day, and he expected a further addition in the near future. He would announce that a parade and shooting would take place on August 28, and he wished to see another full parade. Captain Bax, from AVairoa, would be present that day. and would be in commmand, and he hoped every man would answer the roll. Several of the young ladies of the district had arranged to supply afternoon tea to the members of the troop at the rang© that day, but the rain prevented them from attending. It is understood that a detachment of the Tiniroto troop of the Hurumua Mounted Rifles is to be formed at Hangaroa. A meeting takes place on Saturday, August 21.
