TOLOGA BAY HARBOR BOARD
SPECIAL MEETING
The Cook County Council, sitting as the Tologa Bay Harbor Board, yesterday dealt with a petition from a number of Tologa Bay residents to lease a portion of the foreshore to the Tologa Bay Lightering Company for 14 years, at a nominal rent, in consideration of the company undertaking not to charge wharfage or to increase the wharfage charges. Messrs Lysnar and Sherratt thought it would be inadvisable in view of the rapid development of the district to give any private company a monopoly of the foreshore for such a long period. Mr Sherratt moved that the lease be not granted, as should the Board decide to„erect another wharf at some future date the Lightering Company would have an advantage over any rival shipping companies. Mr Matthews thought/a lease of 14 years to be too long, . and suggested that 3 years was sufficient time. The Hon. Captain Tucker pointed out that the company asked for a concession, but offered no revenue or concessions in return. Mr White thought it best to refuse the lease, and when the ratepayers want a wharf it was for the Board to erect one. Mr Lysnar suggested that the persons who signed the petition might he shareholders in the company, and the Council decided not to grant the lease.
