IMMIGRANTS BY THE PAPAROA.

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 21. There are 136 passengers for New Zealand on the Paparoa, which is due to reach Wellington about the middle of next week. Of these 126 are in the third class. Sixty-three immigrants have been assisted in the payment of their passage money, this number including 29 women, 14 men, and 20 children. Those actually sent out through the High Commissioner’s office number 22 (17 adults-and 5 children), while the other 26 adults and 15 children were nominated by friends. The women include 13 domestics, one housekeeper, and 7 wives travelling out with children to rejoin their husbands. Among the men are seven farmers, one farm laborer, and one dairyman. One of the farmers brings a capital of £4OO and the others have sums varying down to £25. SEIZURE OF SMUGGLED GOODS. On the arrival of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s Tongariro from Waitara to-day the Customs officers made a search for dutiable goods. They found a number of ostrich feathers, a quantity of Teneriffe lace, and some overcoats, of a total value of £7l; also 37 boxes of cigars valued at £1 each, and lolbs of tobacco, worth from 6s to 10s per pound. Court proceedings wili probably follow. DEATH OF a”~CENTENARIAN. DUNEDIN, Aug. 21. Mrs. Ellen Colbourne died at Outran this morning. She was aged 100 years. INDIGNANT CONTINGEKTEES. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 21. At a meeting of the contingenters last night in reference to a statement published in a leading article in the "Vanguard” in reference to contingenters, it was decided to wait on a solicitor with a view to his waiting on Mr M. Nicholas, demanding an unqualified apology to be published in leading New Zealand newspapers and the "Vanguard” within seven days.
