AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. NEW ZEALAND WINS THE ’ PREMIERSHIP.
• Unitrd .Pnxsa Association—CoprnimiT (Received August 22, 5.5 p.m.) BRISBANE, August 22. The championship carnival, was concluded on Saturday in fine weather. There was a large attendance. In the 200 yards championship, two heats, Woodger won his heat easily, beating Ellie (Victoria). The final resulted : Woodger (New Zealand) ... 1 Fay( Queensland) 2 Ellie (Victoria) ... 3 Barker (New South Wales) was the only other starter. Woodger held his opponents v T ell in the first 50 yards. Towards the end he drew away, and won by half-a-yard. Time, 10|sec. One Mile Walking' Championship: Kerr (New 1 Zealand) 1 Harley (New South Wales) ... 2 Winter (New South. Wales .... 3 Three others representing New South Wales and Queensland also .started. Kerr took the lead half-way through the'second lap from Harley and, walking grandly, left the others, and won by 75 yards. Time, 6min 33 4-ssec. 120 Yards Hurdles Cliamiponship:— Iveddell (New Zealand) . ... 1 Maher (Queensland) ' 2 Frawley (Queensland) / These were the only starters. Redded took hi s hurdles alone, and won comfortably. Time, 16 2-ssec. One Mile Running Championship : Wheatley (Victoria) - - 1 Lynch (New South Wales) ... 2 Wentworth (Queensland) ... 3 Dickson and McKnight (New Zealand) also started. McKnight made the pace for the first three four laps, and then began to tire. Wheatley and Dickson went out towards the finish. Wheatley took charge half-a-lap from the finish, and the New Zealanders fell back. Lynch secured second place. Time, 4inin 29 4-ssec. Running High Jump Championship: Smith (New South Wales), sft 10 in ... 1 Moves (.Queensland), sft 9in . . 2 Iveddell did not compete. After a great tussle, Smith won. Fairley (Victoria), Frawley and Maher (Queensland) failed at sft 9in. All secured standard certificates. Running Broad Jump Championship : Smith (New South Wales), 21ft lOin 1 Keddell (New Zealand) 21ft 4*in 2 Moyes (Queensland), 21ft 2in ... 3 The heats were contested on Wednesday,, when McKay fell out. The contestants jumped well, but Smith, who was in splendid form, was an easy Actor. 440 Yards Championship:— Barker (New South Wales) ... 1 “Wheatley (Victoria) 2 Ellie (Victoria) 3 New Zealand was not represented. For several laps the field were together. Then Colley went out and made the pace hot. Barker and Wheatley were leading 50 yards from the post. Barker -..then challenged, and there was a great race for a> dozen yards, when Wheatley fell back. Barker winning by four yards, six yards between second and third. Time, 50 2-ssec. Putting 161 b Shot: O’Reilly (New South -Wales), 39ft Sin ... ... 1 Morgan (New South Wales), 37ft 9in. ... ... v . 2 McGrath (Queensland), 37ft -J-in 3 The Marathon race started shortly after one o’clock* Thirty went out. Moore representd. New Zealand, and was among the first hatch to leave the ring. Four miles out Weyman (New South Wales) was in charge, Laing (Queensland) next, and Blake (Victoria) third, with the others bunched. When! half the course had been completed, Sime (New Soutl’ Wales) was loading, Weyman and Wood (New South Wales) next, and O’Brien (Queensland following. Wood began to draw un on the home journey, passed Albion with a good lead, and eventually won finishing the course in 2hr 59min 15 2-ssec. Cambridge (New South Wales) was next to arrive, 3hr ,i)min' 9sec; Sime (New South Wales) third, 3hr 14min 56sec. Moore (New Zealand) was ninth, 3hr 33min 39sec.
