POVERTY BAY GOLF CLUB.
The final of the mixed foursome tournament was played on Saturday afternoon, between Miss Nolan and F. ; Morgan' and Miss N. Tucker and v A. IF., Wallis, the former winning by 2 up and 1 to play, after a very keenly-contested match. The w'hiners receive Mr. W. R. Barker’s trophies, and Miss Tucker receives a trophy from
- club for th<s runner-up prize. The tournament has proved a most interesting one, great interest being taken in i$ by the players, and it should be a regular fixture on the club’s programme in future. The semi-final of the men’s A tournament was played between W. R. Banker and J. H. Bull. After one of the hardest-fought games of the tournament, the game ended all square, and it wa9 decided.to replay the full game. Bull played brilliantly for the first half of the game, and his opponent deserves great credit for the manner in which he stuck to his task. The playoff should prove a game worth watching. The final game in the B tournament was also played off between H. Barker and W. A. O’Meara, the latter, winning rather easily, and also winning the hogev match, which he played for simultaneously. The best cards handed in for the bogey competition were as follows: —O’Meara (hep 25), 3 up; Anderson (15), 1 up; Murray (15), 1 up; Busby (30), all square; Traill (scr), 1 down; Keiha (plus 2), 2 down; Dodgshun (plus 2), 2 down; Gully (15), 2 down; Chirnsiqe (scr), 4 down; Bull (scr), 4 down. ' Misses Wallis, Agnow-Brown, and Lewis gave afternoon tea to the large crowd of members present. Next Saturday the men will play a qualifying round for the championship, je first 16 to qualify. The following is the draw in connecion with the Poverty Bay ladies’ championship, to begin to-morrow: vLrs. Cole plays-Mrs King, Miss deLautour plays Mrs. Willock, Miss ._ N. Tucker play s Mrs. O’Meara, Miss Sweet (last year’s champion) plays Miss Nolan. Miss Adams plays Miss D. Bull, rs. Bull plays Miss Bright, Mrs. W. Barker plays Miss E. Barker, Mrs. [organ plays Mrs. Barlow. NEW ZEALAND LADIES’ CHAMPION TOURNEY.
[Pick I’iucrs Assouiatiom-1 PALMERSTON N., August 21. The ladies’ championship meeting was continued to-day in fine weather. There were two surpluses during the afternoon. Miss A. Humphries beat Mrs. Guy Williams and Miss Cowper beat Miss Christie, last year’s champion. Playing in the bogey match in the afternoon, Mrs. Williams repeated, her feat of the previous day by doing the round in 89. In the championship Miss Hannay beat Miss Symes 1 up, Miss Cowpcr beat Miss Christie 4 up and 2 to plav, Miss Brandon beat Miss Braithwaite 3 up and 2 to play, Mies Stephenson boat Miss Beatson 7 up and 6 to play, Miss - B. Wood beat Miss Wilson 2~ up, Mrs. Bevan beat Miss Hamlin 1 up, Miss A. Humphreys beat Mrs Williams 3 up to 1 to play, and Mrs. Gould beat Mrs. Turnbull 4 up and 2 to play. ' The bogev match resulted: Miss Brewster (New Plymouth), handicap 18, 2 up; Miss S. Gotrie, handicap 10, square; Mrs. Guy Williams, handicap 5,2 down. . ' PALMERSTON N., August 22. 'There have been only slight showers to-day, following the showers of last night, so if the rain continues to hold off the links should be in good order for tlie semi-finals of the championship. Miss A. Humphreys’ nrilliant play is the subject of general talk after her defeat of Mrs. Guy Williams, who showed that she was not off her game by again equalling the nine links record of 89 in the afternoon. Miss Rattray, on behalf of the South Island, and Miss Duncan, captain of the “Wellington Club, on behalf of tlie North Island, have selected two teams of eight to represent their respective Islands in the teams match. The scores are to be the gross scores in the Don-, nelly Cup and the Coronation medal, to be played - to-morrow, and the first six scores on each side are to bo taken. The teams are:— North: Misses Stephenson, Hannay, Brandon, Hamlin, and Cowper, Mesdames G. Williams, Bevan, and Bidwell. ’ South: Misses Rattray, Gould, Campbell, Wilson, Mill/Christie, Wood and Snodgrass. . The draw for the championship is Miss Hannay and Miss Cowper, Miss Stephenson and Miss Brandon, Miss Humphreys and Mrs Bevan, Miss Wood and Miss Gould. The chances of Miss Stephenson are most favored.
