The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs W. D. Lysnar) have returfied from their trip to Morene. Messrs P. W. Malcolm and Co. will hold an unreserved sale of furniture and effects at 1.30 p.m. to-morrow, on the premises, Harris Street, Kaiti, on account of Mr. Joseph Cotterill, who is leaving the district. Mr A. Keefer, Gisborne, .has been appointed president, and Messrs G. H. Bullard, and 0. Pitau, members of the Tairawhiti Maori Land Board. Mr Bullard fills the place of Mr Broderick, and the other two members are re-apointments. The only case set down for hearing at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday was a claim against Kate xioss, a single woman for the maintainance of her son, who is an inmate of the Burnham Industrial School. The respondent failed to appear and Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., asked the police to notify the woman to attend the Court this morning.

It is announced that Commissioner Perry’s Salvation Army Biorama will pay another visit to Gisborne next week and open a season of eight nights at His Majesty’s Theatre -on September 1. Some notable additions have been made to the pictures since the biorama was last here. Included in these are a series illustrating the persecutions of the early Christians in the days of the Roman Empire, and another showing the trials and sufferings of the Scottish Covenanters. The Biorama Silver an orchestra, and a number of vocalises will assist in tko entertainments.

The new rifle range for the To Karaka. troop of the East Coast Mounted Rifles will be formally opened on/J%ursday. The range, which has been officially passed by the Defence Department, is on Mr. Pattullo’s estate, and within a few mimites’ drive of the township:- It is anticipated that a large number of settlers from the surrounding district will be present at the opening ceremony, which promises to be an event of interest. In the evening the opening of the range will be further celebrated by holding a military ball in the King’s Theatre. Arrangements are well in hand for the entertainment, the music will bo supplied bv Mr. Wootton’s orchestra, the supper‘by Mr. F. Clayton, and a largo crowd is expected.

Some time ago relations between Lion and liua were strained owing to it haying been alleged' that the former evinced a hankering; after the “flesh pots of Egypt,’’ vhilo in Gisborne onj his chief’s business, thereby unduly protracting his stayin town; an impeachment which Lion, flio is, he states, a life-long teetotaller, indignantly. repudiated.. The matter; culminated in a heated scene between, the two, Lion eventually threatening' to resign and to join the “Young Maori, Party.” The breach between tho two was, however, healed, and Lion has again been restored to confidence and favor.

The entertainment by the Juvenile of the Maternity Home, Variety Company, m aid of the tunas from August T 6, is to be given m His Majesty’s Theatre on Friday next, August 27. Tenders, closing at noon on Saturday next are invited for alterations ana additions to outbuildings at the Cosmopolitan Club, constructing septic tanks, drains, etc. Specifications may he obtained at the Club-house. It was ascertained at the hospital last evening that the man John spencer, injured while blasting trees at Mangatu on Friday, was still in a CII !" cal condition, but considering alt things was doing as well as cou.a u expected. Tn addressing the meeting of slieepfarmens, held at Morere on Saturday, when -tho rabbit question was discussed, Mr Lysnar said that Mr Vincent Fyke, manager of the Bank oi Zealand, liad narrated his experiences of the injury caused by the rabbits in the south when there a number or years ago, and which caused the banks to call up their advances against projmrties affected with rabbits. At the meeting of the Management Committee of the Rugby last evening, it was decided that a letter or condolence should be Sent to Mr. W. L. Rees, in the loss of his son, Mr. A. E. Rees, who was for many years a representative footballer in the district. Touching reference was made to the popularity of the late Mr. Rees, memliers speaking in terms of deep respoct for him, and expressing heartfelt sympathy with Mr. W. L. Rees and the members of his family in their loss. The Salvation Army Citadel was well filled last night, when Colonel Knight gave an address on his travels through the islands of Java, Sumatra, and Borneo. The colonel, who had been specially commissioned to make this trip, found many opportunities of getting an insight into the life there that the ordinary traveller would not have, and; in an address lasting nearly two hours, he gave a racy' description of his tour, interspersed with many anecdotes. A very profitable and enjoyable evening was brought to a close with a coffee supper, handed round to those present by the lady workers. As this week’s new programme can only be shown by the Pathe Picture Company to-morrow and Thursday nights, no doubt His Majesty’s Theatre will he well filled on both nights. The programme is long and varied, and comprises some of the finest animated pictures ever shown in Gisborne. “Motoring through France” and “Venice from a Gondola” are specially fine subjects. The comic element is supplied by the “Pocket Policeman,” “The Kidnapped Mother-in-law,” and several others. There will be no performance on Friday, but the management will present a complete change of programme on Saturday afternoon and evening.
