CO.’S STEAMER MOVEMENTS. , WELLINGTON, August 23. The steamer Manapouri, now engaged in the Tahiti service, will withdraw from that trade on her return to "Wellington next week, and will enter the new service recently contracted bv the Union Co. to carry fruit from Fiji to Melbourne. The Tarawera succeeds the Manapouri on the Tahiti run. THE HON. G. FOWLDS. The Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister of Education, left "Wellington to-day on a brief visit to Auckland. FUNERAL OF MR, GEORGE PAYLING. CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. The funeral of the late Mr. George Payling took place this afternoon, there was an exceedingly large attendance, which testified to the general esteem in which the deceased was held, and the popularity which he had won. The public bodies with which he has been connected were strongly represented the pall bearers were drawn from the Christchurch City Council, Hospital Board, Tramway Board, and Trotting Federation. There was a long line-of vehicles, each being- occupied by sympathising friends. The service at the grave was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon Averill, and a short Masonic ceremony was conducted by Rro. H. R. Smith. MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS.

It* transpires that sho left - her six weeks’ old cliild with her : sister-in-law. The body of a man' was founw on Tomahawk beach yesterday afternoon. Deceased, who was apparentlv between GO ami ,70 years of age, had, judging by indications on tho body, been in the water about three days. Near the body was found a walking stick with the Itters .“H.D.” carved on it. The body was to-day identified as that of Herman Boring, aged l 79. Deceased was formerly pro nr iotor of the Turkish baths at Moray Place.
