RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

COLLISION AT KAIAPOI.

[Pick Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. A collision occurred at Kaiapoi railway station at 6 o’clock on Saturday evening, near the south water tank. The express from Culverden comprising an engine and nine vehicles, was standing at the platform, and the train from Christchurch, instead of going to the loop line at the points, came on to the main line and ran into the standing train, forcing it a distance of six yards and damaging the cowcatcher. The passengers were very much shaken, but no one was seriously injured. After removing the cowcatcher from the express- and making a thorough examination of both trains, they were sent on, being half an hour late. The cause of the accident is supposed to have been a stone getting in "between the points. A Departmental inquiry into Saturday night’s railway collision is to be held at Kaiapoi to-morrow. It is currently reported that the points were not opened for the approaching train in such a way as to admit it, and that the shunter, O. Bruzere, is prepared to make a statement exactly as to what happened that will clear up the whole question ae to how the accident happened'.
