GOLF.

LADIES’ CHAMPION TOURNEY.

'Per .v.«s.iLi*rio."< PALMERSTON N., August 23. The weather was again delightful for the golf championship, and as on. the previous days, further surprises were effected in the championship. The fourth heat, which is unfinished, haß eliminated the last of those who have held the New Zealand championship, and has left the semi-final to previously untried golfing talent. Mrs. BidwelL Miss Rattray, Mrs. Williams, and Miss Stephenson, all ex-champions, and Miss Christie, the present champion, are all now spectators. Perhaps the greatest surprise of all was Miss Stephenson’s defeat, because she had been playing such solid golf all the way through, that her partiepation in. the final was looked on assured, yet the quality of the play may be judged from tho fact that Miss Brandon, the young Wellington player who defeated her, put in a very hot round, and - then went out again and signalled a record of the links. At the outset of the tournament the ladies’ links record was 92. tsince then MtbWilliams has twice done 89, Mrs. Bevan and Miss Brandon did it to-day, and Miss Stephenson on Saturday did 92 after losing three stroxes in a hollow log, so that the new record which has lieen created has been signalled four times in one meeting. Miss Humphreys’ win was very remarkable, as her opponent was doing four, and both were playing strongly. The Coronation Medal went to Miss Brewster, of New Plymouth. She would also have taken the Donnelly Oup on the same score, but while others of the Taranaki contingent -were entered for it, Miss Brewster was not thought to have a chance, bo the Cup went to Miss N. Gofrie, as-the next Bestscorer. The driving competition was won by Miss Hamlin, of Napier, with three inches short of 156 yards. Miss _Et Hindmarsh, Napier, was second with 151 yards, and Miss Campbell third with *149 yards. The semi-finals and finals of the championship are to be played to-mor-row'. Mrs. Bevan and Miss Humphreys, Miss Brandon and Miss Cowper meet in the former. Several competitors leave by the express during to-morrow, having had a very enjoyable time. Others remain for the Manawatu Club’s championship meeting.
