All the diphtheria patients are progressing satisfactorily. CH ARGE OF SMUGGLING DISMISSED. WELLINGTON, August 25. At the Magistrate’s Court Charles Maurer, a barber on the Tongariro, was further charged with harboring uncustomed goods, ostrich feathers, overcoats, etc., to the value of £7O. Mr Riddell, S.M., held that it was not conclusively proved that Maurer had harbored goods, and the case was dismissed. A similar charge against Pine, storeman on the Tongariro, was withdrawn. A warrant has ben issued for Pine’s arrest, but defendant had not been apprehended.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 25. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received cable advice that the Waimate, which had been delayed by an accident to her machinery, arrived at Capetown on the 21st, and sailed again on Monday, for Auckland. THE KAIAPOI RAILWAY COLLISION. An inquiry in connection with the railway collision that occurred' at K&iapoi on Saturday afternoon was held at Ivaiapoi yesterday by Mr. W. S. Ward, chief traffic clerk, Mr. J, Young, chief clerk in the engineer’s office, and Mr. P. Meachem, locomotive foreman. A number of railway employees and some of the passengers on the two trains wer examined. The inquiry lasted all day, and the evidence taken will bo forwarded to Wellington.
