SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

GISBORNE

The monthly meeting of the Gisborne School Committee .was held last evening, when there were present Messrs J. Somervell (Chairman), G'. Wildish, A. Spence, G. E. Darton, F. W. Riach, Rev. L. Dawson Thomas, Airs. Walker, Aliss Alorice, and Mr. F. J. Rowley {headmaster). Mr. J. R. Little, Borough Inspector, recommended that new sanitary conveniences be erected for the use of the scholars. The Chairman said that an application had been made to the Education Board to have new outhouses built. The Education Board wrote approving* of the recommendation made by the Committee that the school yards be drained and other small repairs effected. * A letter was received from the Education Board stating that an application had been made to the Department for a grant for a school at Alilltown. The Education Board informed the Committee that Mr. Boland had been instructed to erect a partition in tho infants’ class-room, and that Aliss Adams had been granted one month’s leave of absence on full pay. The letter, was received. Alajor T. W. AlcDonald Officer Commanding the Public School Cadets, wrote stating that the Alinister for Education had approved of the establishment of miniature rifle, ranges at the school, and a £ for £ subsidy would be granted towards the erecting of the ranges. He would he pleased to receive an application for the establishment of such a range at the school, when a prortion of .22 calibre rifles would be issued for use by the cadets, j! The letter was referred to the headmaster. ‘ Air. Darton said that, as regards tho levelling of the school ground, he would be pleased to take the levels, and the Borough Council could be asked to Supply the gravel. He thought the work could be done cheaper by day labor than by contract. , Air. Darton’s offer was accented. Mr. Wildish raised the question of anpplementing the finances of the Committee by arranging some form of entertainment. He would suggest tho holding of some kind of a fair. After an informal discussion the matter was referred" to the Finance Committee. ■ l w v The Chairman welcomed the Rev. L. Dawson Thomas., who was present for the first time since the. Committee was elected ; * ■ , The Headmaster, Mr. F. J. Rowley, reported that two teachers Were absent through sickness, and their places had pot been filled. He was at present holding the term examinations, and the school would close for holidays on Friday next. The attendance had been satis factory, the average being 780. or 91.4 per cent of the roll number, which was 853 scholars. The average attendance of Standard V. boys had been 99.4 for seven weeks. During the holidays a team of girls from the Hastings High School would visit Gisborne to play a hockey match. The school girl 6 would entertain the visitors as their guests. On Monday last Airs. K. L. Stevenson had, delivered a temperance lecture at the school. The report was received. Mr. Darton said that Mr. Lotqn, the Education Board’s instructor in agriculture and nature study, would visit Gisborne on Saturday morning and. deliver a lecture to teachers in the school at 11 o’clock. The Education Board would finance all the cost of the classes. Mr. Wildish suggested that some encouragement should be shown to the scholars to keep up the class attendance. He suggested a merit board on which the attendances could be reThe Headmaster was asked to make a recommendation on the matter at the next meeting. . KAITI. The usual monthly. meeting of the Kaiti School Committee was held hist night, the following members being present—Alessrs F. J. Fyson (chairman), K. Humphries, Rowan. J. C. E. Turner, Sullivan, Jones, and H. E. Hill (secretary). Correspondence was received from the Hawke’s Bay Education Board instructing the Committee to get tho cowls removed from the chimneys that smoked. —It was decided bv the meeting that the chairman {Mr. Fyson) consult with the local representatives of the: Education Board in regard to the matter. ■

The Chairman congratulated the committee on the success attained at the tree-planting function on Thursday hist, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to ,Messrs A. Thomson, G. E. Darton, and other gentlemen who gave very valuable’ assistance during the afternoon. A vote of thanks was also passed to the Mayor (Air. W. D. Lysnar), Alessrs Kirk, and G. E. Darton for addresses delivered on the same occasion. . ' The secretary was instructed to write to Air.' Law, conveying the committee condolence on the untimely demise of Vs daughter, who was a pupil at the school. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Fyson. Turner, and Hill, with Air. J. H..8u1l (headmaster) and Miss Faubert (school mistress)- was set up to arrange for a concert to raise funds for further beautifying and fencing .the school grounds. "The concert to be held as soon as it can be conveniently arranged. The Visiting Committee for the past month reported that they had visited the school during that period, and found everything to be correct. Messrs Rowan and Jones are the Visiting Committee for September. Accounts to the value of £2 0s 7d were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
