The weather was bright and the wicket soft. There were 4000 people present. Smith won the toss. Itelf was caught at second slip off the first ball. The wicket was tricky, and both Vine and Young were frequently beaten, but their defence afterwards improved. A break-hack ball from Hopkins beat Young in that bowler’s second over. He had batted 55 minutes for his total. Vine showed no enterprise. Killick, when he was apparently bowled m Noble’s first over, retired to the pavilion, but was called back. Two runs later Noble bowled him beyond doubt. Three wickets were down for 48. Vine and A. Relf played a useful partnership, the former playing doggedly, but with some faulty'strokes. He was at the wickets foij 150 minutes when he got his leg in front. Five for 84. Relf was taken at long-off five runs later, and from that out the innings was a mere procession. The last six wickets were captured in seven overs. The Australians had lost five wickets for 77 when stumps were drawn. The scores were:

Noble fell to the wicket-keeper five runs later. McAlister gave a difficult chance off the first ball, and got leg before to the second one. Three wickets were down for 23, in 30 minutes. Ransford and Gregory were out by short catches. Trumper made fine strokes and played admirable cricket. Relf was bowling splendidly, hut Vincent was occasionally loose. THE TEST MATCHES. Mr. Maclaren, in an article in “Country Life,” on the test matches, says the Australians thoroughly deserved their victories. They proved themselves the best side and played like good sportsmen. They could not have played a fairer way. Macartney’s performance at Leeds was one of the finest of the year. The English hatting throughout was, unsound.
