MISS SWEET WINS THE LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP.
A great deal of interest was taken in the game to deems the ladies’ championship of the Poverty Bay Golf Club, which was played between Miss Elsie Sweet and Miss F. IC. Adams yesterday afternoon. The weather was fine, and both ladies gave as fine an exhibition as anyone could desire to watch. Their driving was capital, while their brassy shots through the green were picked up cleanly and accurately. In approaching and putting their work was also of a very high standard, and it would have taken a mere man or a good deal more than average ability to have returned better carflsi- Miss Sweet took the first hole in 6 as against her opponent's 7\ and got 2 up by doing a brilliant 4 at the second, which could not have been surpassed by Pare Keiha himself. It is seldom that the best men players record a 4 at this hole. Miss Adams was again a stroke more, which was also highly creditable for such a long hole. The third hole was halved m 5, and Miss Adams, by brilliant play, reduced the lead against her by scoring a good 4 at the 4th, Miss Sweet taking 6, through making a couple of faulty approaches. The sth hole was halved in 5, both ladies playing really fine golf. The 6th was also a half in 6, and Miss Adams drew all square at the 7th by recording a fine 4, as against Miss Sweet’s 5. At the Btli. both got a 4, but Miss Sweet went ahead again at the 9th, the scores reading 7 —6 in her favor. Miss Sweet was playing in brilliant style at this stage, and never missed a shot. The 10th was also annexed by last year’s champion in good stvle in 4, which made her 2 up. lhe 11th and 12th holes were halved in 5 and 6 respectively, and by winning the 13th in 6 as against the 7 of her opponent, Miss Sweet won the championship for the second season in succession by 3up arid 2to play. On the conclusion of the match both ladies were warmly congratulated for Uie splendid form they had exhibited. By winning the championship twice in succession the handsome gold medal becomes the absolute property of Miss Sweet. McCormick, who has been acting as coach to the Poverty Bay Golf Club for the past two months, returns to Auckland by this morning’s steamer. During his stay here, the youthful professional has earned golden opinions by the conscientious and capable manner in which he carried out his duties, and his return will always be welcomed- by members of the club. It is his intention to compete fob the open championship of. New Zealand at the Auckland tournament next month. W. B. Barker was in good form in his round with McCormick yesterday. He went out in 44, and ran “home in 46. : ’ -■ , , This afternoon there will be keen competition to be among the best sixteen in the qualifying round for the championship, and also to secure Mr. H. W. Barker’s trophy for the best nett score. The final for the championship will be played over a 36-hole course. MANAWATU~GOLF CLUB.
(Pick Prksb Association.] , PALMERSTON.N., August 27. In the final for the Manawatu golf championship, Miss Snodgrass, Westport, defeated Mrs; -Bevan;^New-.Zea-land champion, on the. 19th.green. Mrs. Bevan was ordered by her doctor notto play, .but did-so, and was continually short on the greens, which were wet from the rain, but the golf was nevertheless excellent, Miss Snodgrass going up to forty, onlyione over par, and finishing in 92; Mrs. Bevan 93. Miss Gould 70— won the 14hole stroke handicap. Mrs. Guy Williams in playing off for- the bogey handicap, equalledTMrs: Bevan’s new links record of ,84. Miss Rattray (159 yards) won the driving competition, Miss Mill (15H yards) second.
THE WESTPORT LADY CHAMPION
WESTPORT, August 27. Miss Snodgrass, who has just won the ladies’ open golfing championship at Manawatu, beating, in .the final Mrs. Bevan,- .the open champion of New. Zealand, has had a rather remarkable athletic career, having been lady champion of the Westport Golf Club since its inception four years ago; twice, including the "present year, West.-Coast golfing champion, lady champion of the two Westport croquet clubs, and also of the West Coast; and lady in the West .Coast combined tennis championship. Her present performance is all the more creditable because this season she. has had • comparatively little practice on the. links'. • : ,
