The decks of the IVlarere were swept with tremendous seas, and, on one occasion, the engineroom was flooded. Severe north-east gales, accompanied by hail and snow, retarded her progress most of the way. Considerable damage was done to the fittings, and the port forward boat deck was carried away. The Tomoana experienced much the same weather, but got over the voyage without damage. She passed through blinding squalls of snow and hail, and, when in latitude -' 3 deg 41min east, she sighted a pin-nacle-shaped iceberg, over 100 ft in height. Many sailing vessels usually employed in "the Australian trade have been laid up recently in English ports (says an exchange), but advices received from London state that charterers of sail tonnage outwards are experiencing less H-'fficulty in filling their requirements than for a long time past, and a considerable drop in prices has resulted from the detscihination of owners to place their ships in position for the carrying of crops Homewards. A large number’ of vessels are now about to proceed east, and the Australian barvest is expected to provide a plentiful employment for a good proportion of them.' There* are some 60 sailers now in the neighborhood of the united Kingdom, either seeking outward ©mplovment or going out in ballast.
