FIRES.
COTTAGE BURNED. IN STOUT ~ STREET. At a quarter past tsvo o’clock this morning, an alarm of fire was rung from the West End bell, and was quickly taken up by the bell in Gladstone Road. The Brigade turned out with most creditable smartness, and proceeded to the scene of the fire, which wae a cottage in Stout Street, just outside the borough boundary, owned by Mr. W. Devery, and occupied by Mr. Bush, who is employed as a carter by Mr. Brocklebank, carrier and coal merchant. The cottaee was burned to tb© ground, and nothing of the furniture was saved. Mr. Bush had just time to got out the members of his family. The furniture was insured for £125. The fire began in the back part of the house, and no person seemed-#© have apy idea- as to how it w;us'c£p#iSl. Mrs. Bush was awakened by thetsmoke. The fire this morning was the sixth which has occurred in Gisborne or the vicinity in about a fortnight. FIRE AT ASHBURTON. [Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, August 31. Drapery and tailoring premises in Tancred street were badly gutted this evening by fire, the origin of which is supposed to be a defective chimney. The building, which is of wood, wul have to be re-erected. It was owned by W. H. Robinson, and insured for £4OO in the South British Office. The stock, though very little burned, was badly damaged by water, and was insured for £IOOO in the Royal Exchange Office.
