EXPORTS FROM AUCKLAND.

Exports from Auckland in Augustshowed an increase in most lines compared with August, 1908, and in frozen beef, flax, and tallow there were increases on last month's exports. .The gold export was £63,590, as against £57,197 in previous years. A ROUGH TRIP. WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. The Manapouri arrived from the Islands this morning, after a Tough trip all the way. She brings a large quan- , tity of fruit and produce. At Papeete on*the 22nd the ManapoUri exchanged mails, eargo, and passengers with the Mariposa, due at San Francisco tomorrow. EXPORTOF GOLD. During last month New Zealand exported 35,5930 zof gold, valued at *1154.969, a decrease of 6S9oz valued at £3739, as compared with August of last year. The export of silver last month was less by 92030 z, valued at £1197. than in the corresponding month of last year. MAN KNOCKED DOWN BY TRAIN. A man named Harold Standle or. Siandall, about 45 years of age, understood to be a resident of Marton, was feund on the railway line this evening, having been knocked down by a train. The accident does not seem to have been witnessed by anybody. The injured man is unconscious in the hospital suffering from concussion of the brain, and there may be a fracture of the skull, though this is not certain at the time’ of telegraphing. SOUTH CANTERBURY EMPLOYERS’ ASSOCIATION. TIMARU, Sept. 2, The South Canterbury Employers’ Association yesterday passed resolutions placing on record its-appreciation of the valuable services rendered bv the late Mr. S Brown, and its sincere sympathy with the family in their irreparable loss; also a resolution recommending the advisory hoard to nominate Mr. W. Scott as employers’ representative on the Arbitration Court. A POACHER FINED. At the Court this morning. Thomas Grace was fined £5 for shooting wild ducks out of season. i A LAND TAX PROSECUTION. Timothy Toomev. hotelkeeper at Waimate, was fined £2 and costs £2 9s for failing to supply the Commissioner of Tuxes with a land tax return. SNOW IN DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, Sept. 2. Light snow fell in the city overnight. The "high levels have a thick coating. CLAIM AGAINST OTAGO DOCK TRUST. I *t 1 ' Scott Bros., of Christchurch, contractors for the Otago dock, are claiming from tlio Otego Dock Trust £3b,000 on account of construction. The Trust has forwarded it* cheque for £3351 to the contractors in final settlement ot the contract account, the sum mentioned being the balance after deducting a* very considerable amount of penalties for "non-compliance with the dock con tract. Up to date the cheque has not been lifted by the contractors.
