LATE SHIRTS AND PASTIMES.

THE AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND

—THE ESSEX TEAM

[Jnitkb Press Association— Coeyright (Received Sept. 2, 11.20 p m.') LONDON, Sept. 2./ The following is the Essex team for tho match against the commencing tea-day: Fane, McGahey, Douglas, Gillingham, Turner, Gibson, Mead, Carpenter, Reeves, Bhckenhim, Young. | FOOTBALL TARANAKI DEFEATS AUCKLAND. [Per Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH Sept, 2. ■ The finest football struggle seen here this year, and one of the finest games yet played between Auckland and Taranaki representative Rugby teams, was played on the recreation sports ground this afternoon in the presence of four thousand spectators. A strong southerly wind had dried the grounds, which on the previous day looked in an almost impossible state. Each province was represented by the strongest possible combination. Taranaki won by six points (two unconverted, tries by Cameron) to three (a penalty goal kicked by Francis). The better team won on the day’s play, Taranaki’s superiority lying in the back division, whilst the forwards were very evenly matched, the Auckland vanguard being superior in handling the hall. The Auckland backs were very sound in defence, but in attack were not as strong as their opponents. The local team, although altered in personnel but slightly, was almost unrecognisable as the team which played Wanganui last week. Had they been able to get the ball clean from the scrum, Taranaki must have won by more. Cameron’s first try was tho culminating point of a movement initiated in his own 25 by Mynott, most of the backs handling the ball. A splendidly supported run was made by Stohr and Sheehan and the scorer. The points were even at half-time. In the second half Cameron's score again emanated from .Mynott, who had a chance to score near the posts, but unselfishly sent out to Sheehan and Cameron. "The kicking on the whole was poor. O’Sullivan, of the Taranaki team and formerly of the AH Blacks combination, strained himself severely, and is unlikely to take the field again.
