Armstrong, Laver, Carkeek, and Hartigan were omitted from the Australian team. Esiex won the toss. Fane and Douglas were the first to go out. Cotter and Macartney were entrusted with the attack. Rune came steadily. At 50 O’Connor relieved Cotter. Off his first delivery Fane was caught at second slip. From the third ball, without addition to the score, Turner was taken at the wicket. Douglas played carefully. He batted for 100 minutes. Three for 87. McGahey, who was lame, had a man to run for him. Gillingham became a partner with McGahey, and there was a display of bright batting. The century was hoisted in 125 minutes. The wicket after lunch was easy. McGahey lasted 125 minutes. He played a strong defensive game, with fine offdriving. The partnership put on 67 in 65 minutes. After lunch, with four down for 160, Carpenter was dismissed with a brilliant right-handed catch high up, at mid-off. Five for 192. Gillingham did some splendid leg-hitting and driving. He batted for 140 minutes, and hit eight fourers. He was taken at slip, Cotter making a fine catch. Six for 219. Reeves and Gibson exhibited good cricket, and the others poor. With only five minutes left ix> hat, the Australians'lost one wicket. Stumps were then drawn for the day. The attendance was moderate. ENGLISH COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
LONDON, September 2. The County championship figures show that Kent has 16 wins and only 2 losses, the percentage being 77.77. Other percentages are: Lancashire 55.55, Yorkshire 50, Sussex 40, Surrey 39.13. Then follows Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Hampshire, Worcestershire, Notts, Somerset, Warwick, Leicester, Essex, Derby and Gloucester.
