SCHOOL GIRLS’ MATCH. A game between the Hastings and Gisborne School' teams was played on the Domain early on Saturday afternoon. Some very promising play was witnessed, and victory finally rested with the Gisborne girls by-two goals to nil. • The game was controlled by Mr. 0. R. .Olsen. CIVIL SERVICE TEAM ON TOUR. The members of the local Civil Service team left for Napier by the s.s. Monowai last evening. They play a match against the Napier Civil Servants .to-day, at Farndon, and to-mor-row will try conclusions with the Hastings Civil Servants, at Hastings. The visitors will be entertained at a smoke concert in the Foresters’ Hall, Napier, to-night, and return to Gisborne on Wednesday morning. WELLINGTON WINS CHAMPION SHIELD. At Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, in the presence of 4000 spectators, the Wellington representatives succeeded in wresting the New Zealand Hockey * Association’s championship challenge shield from Auckland, the visitors winning by 3 goals to .2. His Excellency the Governor witnessed the • match. The ground played like a billiard table. At the last moment changes had to be made in the Auckland team, owing to men being unable to play, and this seemed to upset the combination. Tlie visitors had the better of tlie game, and thoroughly deserved their win. There was not a weak man in the team. Davies, the ■Wellington inside left, played a brilliant game, while the defence of the visitors was superb. In the first spell Smith scored for Wellington, and Brooke-Smith for Auckland, while in the second half G. Smytho and Davies (Wellington) and Mason (Auckland) secured goals. Mr. E. Hay was" referee. This is Auckland’s first defeat on their own ground for three years. CANTERBURY DEFEATS WANGANUI. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 4. The interprovincial hockey match, Canterbury v. Wanganui, was played at Sydenham Park this; afternoon, m the presence of a fair number of spectators. Canterbury had much the better of the game during the first spell, hut the visitors showed better combination in the latter half, and put up an excellent performance. The game finished : Canterbury 4 goals, Wanganui 2 goals.
