CHESS.
GISBORNE v. WAIROA. /A telegraphic,' chess match between the Gisborne and Wairoa Chess Clubs was commenced on Saturday night. Owing to the press of telegraphic work on the lines the start was delayed till close on 9 p.m., consequently none of the games were finished, and. as yet it is difficult to say which side has the upper hand. At board 4 the Wairoa player haa a piece to the good, while at board 5 the local representatives appeared to have a tangible ; advantage. The other games are air in an interesting stage, with pieces and positions equal? The following are the players, the first-named in each case having jdte move: —, ■,, ~ . ",' Board . 1. —Salisbury (Gisborne) v. Johnston (Wairoa). Board 2.—H. Carr (Wairoa) v. Crawford (Gisborne). : - Board 3.—Witty (Gisborne) v. W. iiiaw (Wairoa). . Board 4.—Kennedy (Wairoa) v. Blackburn (Gisborne). . Board 5.-7—Bull (Gisbor\e) v. L. Shaw (Wairoa). \ The telegraphic arrangements were, as usual, excellent, and the nioves were ■ all transmitted without a, hitch, j The thanks of the club are duo to the local Post Office authorities for their courteous assistance. The players are also greatly indebted to Messrs Rowley and King, who carried out the onerous duties of umpires in their usual efficient manner. Next Saturday night the match will be continued.
