) GISBORNE CO-OPERATIVE BAKERY CO.
Gisborne appears to hare, in the Gisborne Co-operative Bakery Company, Limited, solved the problem of how to make a co-operative venture, by sound and capable management, not only benefit its members by reducing the cost of the staff of life, but prove a sound investment for what capital they put into it. B~ an advertisement appearing in this morning’s issue, it wil be seen that the company has made arrangements to acquire the well-known bakery and confectionery business carried on by Mr. James Erskine at Gisborne, Patutahi ,and Waerenga-a-hika. Mr. Er&kine’s Business has _ for many years been the leading one in the district. It is only twelve months since the Gisborne Co-operative Bakery Company, Limited, started operations in Gisborne by acquiring the business of Mr. A. P. Hailey in Gladstone Road. It speaks volumes for the capable manner in which the company has been managed, and for the enterprise' of the directors, that they should be in a position to acquire such an influential business as that of Mr. Erskine’s in such a short space of time. The companv possess a most complete and up-to-date plant, capable, it is claimed, of making all the bread required .£ol' the whole of the Poverty Bay district, and it is intended to transfer this to their new premises. This course will greatly reduce the cost of production and delivery, and enable the company, to supply goods at a minimum cost. Mr. Erskine’s business has been acquired on exceptionally favorable terms, and the company are further fortunate in having made arrangements to retain M. Erskine’s services, and thus secure the benefit of his long experience of the trade in this district. Mr. Erskine joins the board of directors on the Ist of November next, on which date the company enters into possession. A strong board of directors exists in Mr. G. Palairet (chairman), Rev. H. W. "Williams, Messrs A. P. Hailey, J. Harold Kane, L. Redward, and Jas. C. Aicken, while Mr 0, G. Piesse is secretary and broker. The capital' oT the company is £SOOO, divided into 5000 shares of £1 each, and there should be little difficulty in placing the shares, as profits are to be divided not only as dividends upon capital, but also as a bonus to consumers.
