TEEE r CHAMPION SHIP. : !
On the Poverty' Bay-Golf Olnb’s 'links this afternoon the. tournament to decide the championship' .will be Continued. ? Of the eight left in the second round, Messrs W; R. Barker and ReX. "Wil-lock leave'. Jor Auckland this morn-; ing to attend the New:- Zealand, championshin meeting,' and tlieir opponents, W. V. R. Luttrell and W. A. respectively, will, therefore win their, matches to-day J by default. _ . This leaves only two matches in-.the second, round to ' be .played this ;. afternpoift; Pare Keiha .meeting ;G. . M, JDki.dgshUn and Geoff ATayihg W. - A. J,. Gibson. . ' v.-^y The ! meeting ‘ between - Keiha :. and Dodgshun should provide onC, ofthe, •keenest?, games ever- witnessed J in .the, district. For six? seasons,, past, .KeiHa l^as, had "practically ..little difficulty? in; proving his undoubted; righf> to thc Aitle .of champion golf, playpr c>i the .district by winning, the championship without being called upon to put forth his best powers. This season,;.‘However, .many; are of opinion that in Dodgsliun the club has secured.,a?player who is as good,".- if' not supianor to. the local champion. The , match this afternoon will set all doubts, as. to. tlie relative abilities of the two rivepf at rest . for the present' season. - The: game, should be well worth going- a long- way to see. and the two men will be certain to have a large crowd, following theitf
•rouiid the. links this afternoon. Dodgshun has been doing consistently good founds during the season, but has failed to do himself justice when big fen-; gagements had to be decided. He lost his games at Gisborne and Napier on the, occasion of the. : matches between the Poverty Bay and Napier Golf 'Clubs.; At Gisborne lie unexpectedly went down before N. Kettle >~ who is not. by any means one of Napier’s leading players, but met a strong opponent at Napier in Kapi Tarelia, who defeateel him rather easily by 4 up and 3 to play. As a result of these defeats, many pepple hold the that Dodgshun is seriously handicapped by ne-rres, and is unable to do himself justice on that account when the fierce (light of a big match beats about the links. However, it must be remembered that he put up a great fight when he met Pare Keiha in the men’s A handicap .tournament early in the season, and only lost by a putt on the ,18th green. •■ ' . Par© Keiha, on the other hand, is an.experienced old veteran, who never plays so well as when the occasion demands it. Ho knows the local links •as mo other man does, and knows the game of golf from Ato Z. He holds the reputation of never having been defeated in a match off the mark on his own links, and has risen to trie occasion finely in both matches played by his club against Napier this year: At Gisborne, he accounted for Troutbeok, Napier’s No. ,1 man, by 5 up and 4 to play, and further enhanced his reputation by halving his t match with the redoubtable Kurepa Tareha in the match at Napier. Keiha was 1 up at tlie 17th and it was onlv superb play, on. Kurepa’s part at the last hole -that saVed him from defeat. Keiha ha-s the - advantage of not knowing what nerves are. He is as stoical as a Red Indian. It,will thus be seen that the, man who wrests the honor of champion from Pare Keiha will require to he a’ plnyei in the first flight. ' . Dodgshun has prtived hims&lf a- man by the splendid scores he has been consistently., recording this -season, and the. meeting of the two cracks this afternoon should be ’ brimful' of interest and excitement from the drive-off to the final putt. Geoff ‘Willoclc should have no difficulty in disposing of Gibson. The former is a player of great promise, and one of the steadiest golfers in the district. He proved his right to be regarded as a strong claimant for the title of champion the decisive manner in which he defeated- Pare Keiha in the men’s A tournament. This is Gibson’s third sqason at the game, and though he has come on well he is not steady enough in his play to make him a serious rival to a player of Geoff. Willock’s calibre. As before stated, Luttrell and O’Meara take their games by default, asid the winners of this afternoon’s matches will meet them in the semi-final-. »"
