TRADES AND LABOR COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING.
The East Coast Trades and Labor Council held their monthly meeting on Saturday evening. Mr. Wilson Dun-, can occupied the w chair.' A letter, accompanied with_plans, was received froift Mr. It. M. Jbirrell, stating that he was about to offer to the Government an . area of about 50 acres, abutting bn the' railway line near the racecourse platform, to enable the <j Government to provide workmen’s homes. Mr. Birrell stilted that the character and situation of the land made it most suitable for residential sites, and he was prepaired to accept such a price as would enable the Government to ask low rentals for the houses when built. —It was resolved that the letter be received. A letter was received from the Town Clerk, stating that Bos Worship the Mayor regretted the delay in answering the Trades Council’s letter of July 12th re unemployed problem, as the letter -in question was sent whilst His Worship was away from the district and thus went astray. The question of the unemployed was being attended to. and the committee would be glad of the co-operation of si representative from the Trades Council. —The secretary (Mr. J. H. Hall) was appointed as the Trades Council’s representative. A letter was also received from the Borough Council, stating _ that in regard to a deputation waiting upon the Council in respect to recreation grounds for Gisborne, that they had .already 1 made provision for such in the loan proposals, hut that they would be pleased to hear what the delegates had to say on the matter. The following were a —ointed to fill vacancies among the Council’s officers: President, Mr. Wilson Duncan: vicepresident, Mr. Syd. Old:; and Messrs W. Coleman and CL Petersen on the Executive, the retiring' officers having left the district. It was resolved that the discussion of the New Zealand Trades and Labor Council’s Conference remilis be deferred to a special meeting, to be held on Saturday evening next. . . Reports of progress were received re Labor Day procession, and by the promises already received, the Council felt confident' that the project would be on a larger scale than last year. A notice of motion was n/abled tor the alteration of the meeting night oi the Council. ■>
