BOROUGH STREET WATERING
THE NEW CARTS
The Canterbury Shipping Co.’s s.s. Ripple, which arrived from south on Saturday morning, brought, along with a large general cargo, the two new rotary-sprinkler watering carts, which have been built to the order of the Gisborne Borough Council by Messrs Cooper and Duncan, oir Christchurch. The new carts are not remarkable for their beauty and symmetry, but great utility is claimed for them, and it is said that in the places where they are in use they have been pronounced a complete success. The tank has a capacity of 600 gallons, is rectangular in shape, and of 10 guage steel throughout, with angle steel corners properly rivetted. There is a tank valve and levers which are operated from a driver’s seat placed in a convenient position, and there is also a filling door, or attachment for the hose from a hydrant. The framework of the carts' is of channel steel, and the springs appear to be of quite sufficient strength to bear the load they will 'be called upon to carry. The wheels consist of ironbark naves and spokes. The front wheels are 3ft 3in high, and those in the rear sft in height, while the ferecarriages are framed with, large diameter lock rings. Two sprinklers are fitted to each cart. They are twin ball-bearing, of galvanised steel, and are driven by means oir an arrangement of cog* wheels, sending a very wide shower of water across the street in two directions when in use.
