THE RUGBY GAME.
SENIOR COMPETITION.
Number 2 ground at the Victoria Domain was, on Saturday afternoon, the scene of the second game* in the premiership matches betwen Kaiti-City and Makauri, th leading teams in the town and country competitions. The game was practically a repetition of that played on the previous Saturday, and although Kaiti-City only won. by 12 points to 9, they held their opponents safe all through the game. Mr. A. Parlane ably controlled the game. NAPIER PIRATES (3) v. KAITICITY JUNIORS <0). The above match was played on the Victoria Domain on Saturday, there being splendid football weather, and the ground in good order. The match resulted in a win for the visitors by 3 points (a penalty goal) to nil. _ The teams were evenly matched, and KaitiCity were unfortunate in not making a draw of it, as they were attacking during the whole of the second spell. City won the toss and played with the sun behind them. McGregor, put in a good run to Pirates’ twenty-five, who returned to centre, after which bad passing by the Kaiti-City backs let the visiting forwards away, but KaitiCity were relieved by a free kick. McGregor and Bristow carried play to Pirates’ line, who returned to centre. Bristow and Hargreaves were next prominent by good play, and Pirates were compelled to force. Kaiti-City were at this stage having the best of the game, and the visitors were kept on the defensive. F. Holder relieved his side by good kicking on several occasions, after which. Pirates took a turn in attacking, and carried) play to Kaiti-City’s line, where a. scrum was formed. Aldridge received the ball and had a fruitless shot at, goal, and Stubbs forced. After the kick-out Stubbs stopped a threatening rush of the visitors, and Pollock got in a good kick. Pirates were now pressing hut Hargreaves found the line at half-way 0 Neill stopped a good, passing rush by the Pirates’ backs, and afterwards Huston made a good run down the line, but was thrown out at the corner, and after some attacking by both teams Pirates were compelled to force. For the next few minutes Kaiti-City were busy defending, but O’Neill put in a splendid run and carried play to Pirates’ territory, where F. Holder relieved the pressure. ' Kaiti-City were shortly afterwards compelled to force. With play, in. front of the Kaiti-City goal. Pirates were awarded a free kick, and Richardson kicked a goal. Pirates 3, KaitiCitv nil. Half-time was then called. After resuming play, Kaiti-City put the visitors on the defensive, _ and O’Neill and Pollock were conspicuous by good runs. Pirates had a. shot at goal from a penalty, and Richardson by good dribbling carried play to KaitiCity’s territory, hut Pollock sent them hack by a good kick past half-way. Oman received the hall from a scrum in Pirates’ territory, and had a futile shot at goal, and Pirates forced. Roche next marked in a fair position, and O’Neill made a good attempt at goal. Simpkins put in a good run for the visitors, Stubbs saved. Pollock centred’ in Pirates’ twenty-five, who saved hv marking. Kaiti-City were now having much the better of the <?ame, and Pollock sent the ball out near Pirates’ line. The visiters relieved the pressure for a while, but were again sent back, and Stubbs tried to pot a goal, but missed, and Pirates again forced. Fromm returned the kick-ont to Pirates’ twenty-five, and W. Holder relieved. Kaiti-City were awarded a penalty kick, and Bristow tried to drop-kick a goal. 0 Neill put in another splendid run to the visitors territory, who saved by forcing twice in quick succession. A series of scrums ensued on the Pirates’ line, and Huston (Kaiti-City) sent the hall out _to O’Neill, who made a dash for the line, but was thrown out at the corner and Pirates forced. Play continued in the visitors’ twenty-five, and. Bristow had. another unsuccessful shot at goal from a free kick. Shortly afterwards time was called, with Pirates on the defensive, the game ending—Pirates 3 points, Kaiti-City nil. Mr. W. Hay controlled) the game. AUCKLAND DEFEATS TARANAKI. TPer Press Association.! AUCKLAND, Sept. 12. The representative Rugby football match played yesterday between Auckland and Taranaki teams resulted in a win for Auckland by 18 points to 5. The weather was ideal, and the game attracted an attendance of over 6000, which included the vice-regal party. Auckland, playing with the wind in the first spell, scored two tries, Sellars and Murray touching down. Early in the second spell Taranaki became aggressive, hut Auckland’s defence was equal to the strain. In going down to a forward rush, Renwick received a slight concussion, and was carried off the field in an unconscious condition. Auckland’s additional scores comprised four unconverted tries, which were obtained by Hayward, O’Leary, and McGregor (2). Taranaki’s points were the result of a most sensational try scored by Cameron, who ran from near mid-field arid practically beat the whole of the Auckland hack division. Dive converted the try. The concluding stage of the game was very fast and exciting. Mr. J. Williams, late of Dunedin, Tefereed. HAWKE’S BAY CHALLENGE SHIELD. NAPIER, Sept. 12. A match between Rovers (Hastings) and Ahuriri to-day, for the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union’s championship challenge shield, ended; in a draw, each side scoring 6 points. MANAWATU DEFEATS WAIRARAPA. PALMERSTON N., Sept. 12. In fine weather and on a good ground Manawatu proved much too good for Wairarapa, which did not play up to its old-time reputation. Owing to a misunderstanding on the part of two forwards, who thought the game started at 3 p.m. instead of 2.30 p.m., Manawatu played the first fifteen minutes two men short. Ford and Buchanan scored trie® for Manawatu in the first spell. In the second spell Buchanan converted a try by M. Carroll. Chum Caroll also scored, then McKenzie scored for Wairarapa, Ball converting. The game ended: Manawatu 14, Wairarapa 5. TARANAKI MAORIS BEAT WANGANUI MAORIS. WANGANUI, Sept. 12. The Rugby match Between the Wanganui and the Taranaki Maori representatives was played on Saturday afternoon, the visitors winning by 20 points to nil.
UNIVERSITY MATCH—A WIN FOR NEW ZEALAND.
WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. Three thousand witnessed the football match between .New Zealand and Sydney Universities. New Zealand won by 17 points to 14 (five tries, one converted) to 14 (three tries, one oEriP verted, and a penalty goal). The weather was fine, and the ground in splendid order. WELLINGTON BEATS OTAGO. DUNEDIN, Sept. 11. The football match, Wellington v. Otago, was played this afternoon on the Carisbrooh,. ground, which was in capital order. The weather was fine, and the attendance about 9000. In the first spell the Otago forwards, by good play, kept the upper -and and scored a try. O’Sullivan also crossed the line, but lost the ball, and later on Fitzpatrick repeated a similar performance. The Wellington representatives, playing with dash, opened the second spell with a rush into Otago territory, and ten minutes later Mc-Ueod got a try. Otago made gallant efforts to score, but the Wellington defence was sound. From a line-out near the quarter flag Walsh got into possession and passed to Rangi Wilson, who dodged over the line. Mitchinson safely piloted the ball over the bar. Shortly afterwards Mitchinson made_a fine swerving run and passed to McKenzie, who scored near the posts. Roberts placed a goal. From this onwards the game was not very interesting, as both teams were tired after their strenuous play. No further score was made, and the game ended: Wellington 13, Otago 3: Mr. A. Downer (Dunedin) made a satisfactory referee. McLeod afld W-alsho retired, the. former with a broken rib and the latter with ah injury to his knee. Ivemey also retired hurt, his knee having been wrenched. WALLABIES BEAT KANGAROOS. United Phess Association —Copyricht (Received Sept. 12, 5.5 p.m.) i SYDNEY, Sept. 12. The Wallabies beat the Kangaroos by 15 points to 6. The Wallabies were brilliant and completely outplayed the Kangaroos. The game was a strenuous one.
ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.
RANGERS (6) v. Y.M.C.A. (4)
The above teams met at the Carnarvon Street ground on Saturday afternoon in splendid weather. Y.M.C.A. took the field with a full team, but Rangers could, only muster together nine players. A fast and interesting game resulted, Y.M.C.A. having the better of the first spell, leading by three goals to nil at the interval. After the spell, Rangers livened up a good deal, and quickly rattled on four goals, establishing a lead. Later on Y.M.C.A. added another goal, and Rangers notched a couple of additional goals, eventually winning by 6 goals to four. ’ The goals for Y.M.C.A. were scored bv Clarkson, Miller, and from a scramble in the goal mouth; and for Rangers Hogg and Sharp (5) were the scorers. THE AUSTRALIAN GAME. AUCKLAND DEFEATS CANTERBURY. FPer Press Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 11. The first representative match between Auckland and Canterbury teams under Australian rules was played at St. Albans Park this afternoon. The weather was fine, but a fairly strong wind was blowing, and the ground was very heavy in places. The Aucklanders, who showed the better combination, had the best of the play in the first spell, having the wind behind them, and at the call of time had scored 29 points to 8; and at the end of the second quarter they had 37 points to 11 in their favor. The home team subsequently had the better of the play, but they could not make up their arrears, and -were eventually beaten by 7 goals and 8 behinds (50 points) to 5 goals and 17 behinds (47 points). The visitors were slightly better than the local team in the finer points of the game, especially in their accuracy in centreing the ball, but on the whole both sides performed creditably.
