BOARD OF EDUCATION.
MEETING AT NAPIER. (Special to “Times.”) NAPIER, Sept. 13. The meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Board of Education was held to-day. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. Darton. - The Chairman reported that schools will be opened in, a temporary' biiildiflfe at Opoutama, and also at Otoko. In regard to the committee’s report on the appointment of teachers, it was decided that with a view to the classification of teachers on a common basis, the Board would like to get the opinions of other Boards as to the advisability of formulating a common scheme of appointment and promotion of teachers.
Mr. Loten’s scheme of work in agriculture and dairying was adopted. The Ormond School Committee’s application for a skylight was declined, and the Inspector was directed to report re blinds. The Puha Committee asked for a grant for levelling, for an additional tank, and for increased accommodation. The first request was deferred; for more information, arid it was decided that the Government be asked for a grant for the expense involved in the others. The Motif Committee applied for £2 for drainage, and 10s for removing an out-office.—The request was declined. In reply to a letter from the Gisborne Committee re out-offices, it was decided that the committee be asked to supply particulars of the requirements. A month’s leave was granted to Miss Adams. . . The Department wrote that Inspectors have the right to withhold Standard VI. certificates wll °^ attendance at the techriieiU classes is unsatisfactory. _ , A motion for the alteration of scholarship regulations was deferred for further information as to the custom of other Boards.; . ~. > TPer Press- Association.] ■ ';< At the meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board to-day, the Chairman (Sir William Russell) moved in the direction of confining-the Board’s junior scholarships to public school children, leaving the Board’s senior, scholarships open to all children. He contended that his proposal was in accordance with the statute. " ' Other members of the Board opposed the proposal, pointing but that it would he a hardship to the high schools, a large proportion of whose pupils were drawn from Board schools.' ; An amendment that further consideration of tlie matter be postponed was carried with only two dissentients."
