PARTY GOVERNMENT.
That party government has been permitted to exist so long may he attributed mainly to a selfish love of power on the part of leaders and to sheer indifference in the people, an apathetic spirit accentuated in this country by reason of the fact that the Government is usually tolerably willing to meet the wishes of the electors. Almost every thinking man considers the party system ridiculous, but the efforts •of enlightened individuals towards introducing a better system have hitherto betpi ’lmpotent to stem the tide of popular indifference. With the.passage of years the ineptitude and futdity of the party system become ever more apparent, and there are grounds for the hope that in this part of the world it will receive its deathblow ere many more years have passed. When it is at last finally abolished, Parliament will be relieved from the reproach of being a mere “talking shop/’ and will rapidly develop into an institution worthy of the country over' whose affairs it is appointed to rule.— Patea ‘Press.’
