THE SEWERAGE SCHEME.
APPROVAL OF MR. MARCH ANT’S PROPOSAL.
His Worship the Mayor, Mr. W. D. Lysnar. has received a letter from Mr. F W. Marchant, C.E., of Timaru, respecting the recent conference of experts on his scheme for dealing with the sewerage of Gisborne. Mr. Marchant writes:—“Mr. Cuthbert and I visited Wellington in reply to Dr. Frengiey’s telegram of Saturday last, and held a lengthy conference with the Engineer-in-Chief and Dr. Frengley concerning the sewerage scheme proposed by me for Gisborne. All ray proposals and estimates of construction were accepted after due consideration. Dr. Frengley particularly urged that his Department should have a free, hand in the matter of arranging the house connection details. This I conceded, and his Department will accordingly draw up the necessary regulations dealing with this matter, which your corporation must embody in a bylaw. The Engl n eer -i n-Chief thought that £IOO a year or thereabouts should lie set aside us a sinking fund to allow for the depreciation and renewal of the electrical apparatus and to this I raised no objection. The estimates of construction prepared by me were passed without modification. My opinion of the annual working cost of the scheme for supervision and depreciation is that it will be found to be less than a total of £SOO a year. The outcome of the conference was that, practicallv speaking, complete unanimity existed concerning all the essential points of the scheme, and which should satisfy your Council concerning its value from an engineering point of view.’’
