THE CHINESE CONSUL. [Per Press Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 16. Mr. Hwang, Chinese Consul-General, arrived to-day and called on the Mayor. To-morrow he meets the consular representatives; and will be welcomed at a public meeting in the evening. He is to leave on Saturday for Dunedin.
ALLEGED PUBLICATION OF BETTING NEWS.
At the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Justice Sim heard the appeal by Matthew Barnett against the decision of Mr. Haselden, S.M., who fined the appellant for publishing, in the weekly newspaper “Daylight,” betting information. The grounds of the appeal were: (I) That the information came from special correspondence and not from third parties; (2) that the information published was not betting news. Judgment was reserved. SUPREME COURT. HOKITIKA, Sept. 16. At the Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Denniston, William Moycan, charged with arson at Reefton, was acquitted. This was the only criminal case. In the Divorce Court, a decree nisi was made in Rosser y. Rosser and another (husband’s petition). CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT. DUNEDIN, Sept. 16. Charles John Lindley, cleth. pleaded guilty of theft of £234, the property of the trustees of the late Andrew Lees. He was committed for sentence. GORLITZ V. KUBELIK. In the action, Gorlitz v. Kubelik, the jury awarded Gorlitz £1250. [The action was one for damages for breach of contract.]
