CYCLING.
CHAMPION ROAD RACE. A road race from Ormond to Gisborne took place yesterday afternoon, the contest being for the championship of the district. The competitors were divided into two grades, senior and junior, and the race resulted as follows : Second grade.—A. Anderson 1, S. Whitehead 2, L. Wilkinson 3. H, Anderson, W. Davis, A. Wilkinson, J. King, W. Condon, A. Bell, A. Morns, and J. Jones also started. The riders got a good start at Ormond, and with H. Anderson and Morris forcing the pace, a good speed was kept up. When sprinting began in the last few hundred yards, Whitehead and A. Anderson singled themselves out. The latter passed his opponent 50 yards from the finish, and won easily by several lengtlis. Time, 32min 30sec. Junior grade.—S. Tate 1, A. Sutton 2. D. Morris also started. A good race, won by two lengths. Time, 40 minutes. Mr. Con. Neenan acted as starter at Ormond, and Messrs J. Gough, W. Harvard, and T. Clarkson were the judges. An important handicap race is fixed to take place on November 9, the journey being from Gisbornse to Te Karaka and back. The first prize will be a New Centaur bicycle.
