FOOTBALL

THE RUGBY GAME. CITY WINS THURSDAY CHAMPIONSHIP. The Thursday championship games were continued at the Domain yesterday afternoon in perfect weather. The ground was in splendid order, but there was only a moderate attendance of spectators. By defeating Star the City Club is placed at the head of the competition, and becomes the holder of the Lysnar banner. GISBORNE (11) v. ALHAMBRA (3). Neither of these teams was fully represented. Alhambra were the greatest sufferers in- this respect, hut once more they put up an excellent fight against heavy odds, and had quite as much of thg play as their opponents, especially in the second spell. Their score was cleverly obtained bv Carter, who intercepted a pass in midfield and raced over, but Oman failed badly at goal. Tries for Gisborne were secured bv R. Campbell, T. Henderson, and T. Swain, and J. Newton converted one of them. Mr. C. Somervell was the referee. CITY (16) v. STAR (4). For practically a final championship game, this was by no means a good exhibition. Although fast, and at times fairly willing, there was a great amount of scrambling olay. The game was fairly even in the first spell, but towards the finish City had all the best of matters. Shepherd, Gatland, Witty and Toeker scored for City, the two former scores being the result of brilliant individual runs, and the two latter resulting from combined runs. Two of the tries were converted, from easy positions by Witty and Fitzgerald. The only score obtained by Star was a cleverly dropped goal by Makaore from well outside the City 25. The game was controlled by Mr. J. J. Martin. THE AUSTRALIAN GAME. IMPERIALS .(65) v. AUSTRALS {57). A match under the Australian rules took place yesterday afternoon on the League’s ground, when Imperials met Australs. Very few players put in an appearance, and so the' game was very hard for those who took part. However, a very even game was witnessed. and there was little to choose between the players. When the final whistle blew the scores were: Imperials 9 goals 11 behinds (65 points) ; Australs 8 goals 9 behinds (57 points). THE ASSOCIATION GAME. TO-MORROW’S MATCH. The match to-morrow will take the form of a practice game between Taruheru (champions for the season) and a combined team, to be played at Nelson Bros.’ works. The kick-off is at 2.45. The following are the teams: Combined —Creighton, Douglas, Scroggie, Grimshaw, MeLachlan, Young, Griffen, Hogg, Rennie, Sharp, and Hoare; reserves. Sutherland and Miller. The team is to meet at the post office at 2 o’clock. Taruheru team—-Mathieson, Whitely, Coombes, Jennings, Oates, Stathabm. Reid. Lasker, Michie, Minhis, and Sharpies. Mr. Whyte is to bo referee. THE NORTHERN UNION GAME. AUCKLAND DEFEATS TARANAKI. f Per Press Association.! NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 16. Auckland and Taranaki teams, playing under Northern Union rules, met at New Plymouth this afternoon, in perfect weather and a dry ground. About fifteen hundred spectators were present. Auckland won by 27 points to 11, the local men falling away completely in the second spell. • For Auckland tries were scored by Griffin (2), Wynyard, Carlow, and Woodward, and goals were kicked by Brabburn and Moir. Smith and Hooker scored Taranaki’s tries, and Hardgreaves kicked a goal.
