GISBORNE LIGHTING.
PROPOSED ELECTRIC PLANT.
GASWORKS MANAGER’S VIEWS
The possibility of Gisborne being lighted by electricity was discussed by a “Times” reporter yesterday Avith MiHenry Hoare, manager of the gasworks. , The statement of Mr. Jones, submitted at the Borough Council meeting, that an adequate plant could be installed for under £IO,OOO, was dismissed as an absurdity by Mr. Hoa-re. f ‘A& a matter of fact/’ heeaidj gas is now holding its own against electricity in much bigger places than Gisborne. This, of course, is due to the recent inventions in the shape of incandescent lights, though there have lately been one or two new introductions in electric lamps. The mtroducton of the incandescent mantle practically revolutionised gas lighting.” Mr. Hoare further expressed the opinion that the large area covered by the town in proportion to the number of houses would make the laying or electric mains and anything like an extensive reticulation too expensive to yield anything like a profit.
