MATAWHERO STOCK SALES.

The fortnightly stock sale at Matnwhero was held yesterday. There was only a small attendance of buyers, and with little demand for anything except fat stock, a slow, dragging sale resulted, SHEEP. The total yarding of sheep was about 2300, and a number of the lots which were passed in at auction were afterwards privately disposed of. The quality of the entry was by no means, good, and the prices realised were hardly up to the average of recent sales. Fat ewes sold from 10s for light weights to 13s for heavier sorts, and fat wethers realised from 12s 3d to 13s Id, while lighter weight wethers changed, hands at from 9s 6d to 11s. The inferior quality of the entry of sheep was most noticeable amongst the stores.,, and a good many pens failed to find a purchaser. Several lots of ewes, with a big percentage of lambs, were offered, and sold at prices ranging from 9s 9d to 13s 6d, the latter price being obtained for a pen of 32 ewes with .35 lambs. A nice line of 100 ewes, with 100 lambs, changed hands at 11s. Hoggets were not a strong entry, and poor prices were obtained, 9s being the top price for a pen of 200 offered by Dalgety and Co. Other lots were sold at from 6s to Bs. The following were the principal sales amongst the store sheep, the fats being offered in the customary small lots. Hoggets: 31 (small) at 4s 9d, 19 at 6s 3d, 212 at 7s, 14 at Bs, 200 at 9s; ewesi and lambs: 28 at 9s 9d, 100 at 11s, 17 at 12s, 32 atl 13s 6d; wethers: 25 at 11s, 17 at 12s 7d. CATTLE. The yarding of cattle was small, and with the exception of beef beasts, sold poorly. The highest price realised was ~Zo 17s 6d, at which a line oi 10 heavy weight bullocks were quitted. hat cows realised £4 to £4 17s 6d, and well forward heifers sold from £2. 17s od to £3 10s. Store cattle comprised the major portion of the entry, hut comparatively few were sold under the hammer. Springing heifers brought an average of from £4 to £4 10s, while young mixed cattle sold at from £1 0s 6d to £1 16s, and £2 for yearling steers and heifers. A line of 46 young heifers and cows changed hands at £2 10s, hut the other sales were mostly in odd small lots: 14 2-year-old steers sold at £3 Is, and 30 yearlings at £1 lbs. PIGS. As usual there was an excellent demand for pigs, and the entry was larger than usual. Four porkers fetched £1 13s while about 50 well-grown pigs changed hands at prices ranging' from 15s to 22s 6d.
