THE NAVY LEAGUE.

PROJECTED VISIT OF H.M.S PROMETHEUS.

The hon. secretary of the Gisborne branch of the Navy League (Mr. Livick) has received a letter from Mr. C. W. Palmer, secretary of the Wellington branch, conveying the Wellington executive’s warmest congratulations upon the formation of a branch at Gisborne. Mr. Palmer states that he had written to Commander J. TGlossop, R.N., upon his arrival at Auckland, informing him of the formation of a branch of the League at Gisborne, and expresisng the hope that his ship would be calling there. He has been advised by the Hon. Mr. Carroll that the Prometheus is to visit Gisborne. probably on September _ 25th. Mr. Palmer suggests that in view of the visit it would be well to form the school branches at once and to arrange for visits to the warship. In the absence of Colonel Porter, C. 8., president of the local branch of the Naw League, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar) urges that masters of schools should interest themselves in the matter, and have as many of their pupils as possible enrolled in the. Navy League before the end of next week. The subscription to the League is only one shilling, in return for which good value is given, in the form of a bronze medal, a diploma of membership, and the Navy League Book, which contains a great amount of interesting information regarding the British navy, and army, past and present. Further, membership of the League entitles a visit to ships of TJ-ar when convenient, and in order that this privilege may be availed of next week by local members, His Worship proposes to arrange for a steamer to take members off to the Prometheus. Another feature of the League work is that where the number of school children warrants it prizes are annually given for compositions on nnv&l liistory subjects. Girls as well as boys may be enrolled. It is hoped that a strong branch of the Navy League may be formfed in Gisborne.
