THE ASSOCIATION GAME. (Notes by “Soccer.”) The most interesting match of the season took place at Taruheru on Saturday, when a combined team played a practice match against the winners of the League competition — the Taruheru club. This club has had an unbroken run of success, winning six matches in succession, and it was generally supposed they would nave no difficulty in disposing of the combined team. The match was worth going a long way to see, being fast . and full of interesting play from start to finish, and those who iiave the pleasure of witnessing the match on the Domain next Saturday, will seo one of the keenest fought out matches that have been played this season. It is hard to believe that the game has only been introduced to the district a matter of about six weeks or so, to judge by the form shown by some of the players, who give a really fine exhibition of the fine points of the game. The combined team was slightly altered to that advertised, Warren taking Hoare’s place (Hoare having slightly injured his leg on Friday evening at practice) on the outside left, Miller taking Griffin’s on the outside right, and Holland Young’s place at left half. The team to take the field was as follows Goal, Crighton (Y.M.C.A.); backs, Douglas (Y M.C.A.), Scroggie (Rangers), halfbacks, Grirnshaw (Y.M.C.A.), McLachlan (Y.M.C.A.), capt.. Holland (Rangers) ; forwards, Don. Miller (Y.M.C.A), Hogg (Rangers), Sharp'(Rangers), Rennie (Y.M.C.A.), Warren (Rangers). The Combined’s captain lost the toss and kicked off up-hill, against a strong wind. It was soon seen that the Tarnhorn men had met their match at last, and both sides strained every nerve to score, the ball travelling up and down at a great pace. The first score was brought off from a nice combine 1 rush on the town playors part; Miller got well away, and passing to Hogg, who sent on to Sharp, who in turn put the ball beautifully right out to Warren on the left wing, who took it almost up to the Taruheru lino, then passing to Rennie, who heat his man and just tapped it on to Sharp, who shot a pretty goal, amidst deafening Taruheru cheers. Stimulated by this reverse, Taruheru made things warm from the kick-off, and getting a nice passing nisk on got past the town defence. and Michie, passing smartly to Sharpies, this player equalised matters with a beauty. Taruneru followed shortly after. The town team was not to be denied, however, and working a hard game, in which every member of the team did his part well, and almost having to push the ball against the high wind they equalised matters just before the half-time whistle sounded. With the change of ends and the wind in their favor the, combined team had all the best of the gamo, and put on four more goals, one of which was a beauty by Warren, who kicked the hall from the left touch-line and the ball, touching the goal post farthest away from him, shot through amidst apnlauso. For the winners every man played a real good game, from Crighton at goal, who was almost faultless, right through the team to Don. Miller, at outside left; it would bo hard) to praise one man more than another. For the losers, Michie (captain), Oates, Reicly, Sharpies, and “Ginger” perhaps played the best gamo. With the knowledge that they are not quite invincible, the Taruheru hoys will practice hard this coming week, and it is ouite on the cards that they will turn the tables at the Domain next Saturday. Mr Dempsey, in the absence of Mr White, made a very capable referee. The combined team are requested to roll up for practice every evening this week at 5 p.m. at Carnarvon street.
