A LABOR DIFFICULTY.

TROUBLE ON A STEAMER. United Press Association —Copyright (Received September 23, 11.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept, 23. Trouble occurred aboard the Union Company’s s.s. Waitemata, loading at Newcastle under charter for Manila. Up to the present the crew have been paid in accordance with the recent New Zealand Court award. To-day they were told this would not hold good on the trip to Manila, and 24 hours’ notice was given that the pay of seamen and firemen would be reduced. The men thereupon refused work, alleging that they understood that they had been engaged for six months at New Zealand rates. They refused to leave the ship. The aid of the police was then, invoked. The men were ordered off, and left the ship.
