The Aurora Australis was seen here on Saturday night. The Perth Observatory crepprts that it was the finest display seen there, reaching from 15 degrees north to the zenith, and strongest in the south-east.

SEEN IN GISBORNE. Persons who were abroad during the early hours of yesterday morning witnessed the fine display of the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) referred to in the above cable message, lne pnenomenon was first observed at ab'out a quarter to one o’clock, and continued, with short intermissions, till day began fco dawn, about half-past four. Spectators state that the lights appeared at >rst of a pale green hue, but shortly changed to a crimson or deep rose color. The effect, as the beams waxed and waned, is described as being exceedingly beautiful. One observer compared the effect to that of a shower of fiery rain. Another, unaccustomed to the phenomenon, ascribed the glow to a distant conflagration, and suggested that Napier must have been on fire.
