PATHE PICTURES
The new programme of animated pictures at His Alajesty's Theatre is one of the best that has yet been seen in Gisborne, and the matinee and evening performances on Saturday were both well attended. At the evening show a number of officers and men from H.AI.S. Prometheus were present, the former being accompanied in the circle by His AYorship the Alayor and a few members of the Borough Council. The. chief scenic attraction was a film depicting winter sports in Canada, and a pictorial dramatisation of Dumas’ “Three Alusketeers” was interesting and thrilling. An exceedingly funny film told the story of Airs. Jones and how she entertained members of the women’s temperance league to teaBeiug short of servants, Air. Jones masqueraded as a waiter, and surreptitiously dosed the tea with spirits, with very laughable results. A tragic war drama, entitled r 'The Patriot,” and a host of other good things completed an enjoyable programme. The pictures will be shown again to-night and on AVednesday night.
ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY
Lovers of music who attend the Orchestral Society’s complimentary concert to-morrow evening are to be afforded a rich musical treat. The orchestra, which now numbers some 43 performers, has never been in such good playing form as at the present time, a fact that was dearly demonstrated at the two subscription concerts given this season. Before putting aside the delightful programmes of music, an opportunity is to be given non-subscribers ■of hearing the orchestra at its best, and for this purpose a thoroughly popular selection of pieces are to be performed, which includes the “Marionette” overture, prelude to Act 111. of ‘'Lohengrin,” the popular “Turkish Patrol.” and selections from the operas “lolanthe,” “AlerryWidow” and “Ernaui.” A very strong feature of the programme will be the singing of the solo from Verdi’s “Sicilian Vespers,” by Airs. F. P. Wilson. This number is being repeated at this concert in response to numerous requests, and it will have the advantage of an orchestral accompaniment. Airs. Wilson will also sing the bracketed numbers, “Snowflakes” and “Song of Morning, ’' in tho second part. This will be the Inst opportunity of hearing this ladv in Gisborne. Air. W. Johnston Brown will contribute Wallace s stirring “Rebel” and “Son of Alme. Ihe programme also includes’ a flute solo by Mr M Vita and a violin solo by Air. WaYnecke. The whole programme is an excellent one, and is worthy of a large audience. The prices of admission are 2s and Is. and seats can be booked at Air. Miller’s as usual..-The ; f members of tho orchestra are to meet, at Townlcv’s Hall for rehearsal at < 30 p.m, to-day.
