CARTMELL CHALLENGES POSTLE United I’iikss Association—Corynrrnn LONDON, Sept. 29. Cart-moll, the American runner, has turned professional and challenged Postle to three matches of various distances, 130yds to 440yds.

'N. J. Cartmell is a well-known sprinter from the Pennsylvania College. tT.S.A. He represented America in the sprint events at the Olympic games held in L-ondon last year. On that occasion after winning a preliminary and semifinal heats in llseos and 11 l-oseos respectively, lie had to ho- satisfied with fourth place in the final, won in 10 4-5 secs by R. E. Walker, the brilliant little South African sprinter, Rector (America) being second, and Kerr (Canada) third. At the same Olympic games Cartmell took third place in the 200 metres race, which was won in 22 3-osecs by R. Kerr, of Canada. During the season that has just closed in England. Cartmell has been competing at all the principal meetings, and appears to have been running faster than ever. Even the brilliant Walker has been defeated by the American on more than one occasion.

Arthur Postle is an Australian sprinter who holds a virtually unbeaten record. and is looked upon by many as the speediest runner the world has produced in many years. For several years he carried all before him in the Commonwealth, and recently he has been competing in vSouth Africa, and also in England, where he defeated the professional champions of those, countries with, comparative ease.
