Colonel Foxton, the Australian delegate at the Defence Conference, was tendered a farewell luncheon at the United Service Club. Mr Haldane and several London editors were present. Mr. McKenna, First Lord of the Admiralty, regretted his inability to be present. He acknowledged his obligations to Colonel Foxton for the assistance lie had rendered throughout the Defenco Conference. x

Mr Deakin, referring to the publication of correspondence with New Zealand regarding the combined fleet, said he took it that the ships in New Zealand water s would necessarily co-oper-ate with the Australian unit in war, and probably on occasions in time of peace, at the same time he ventured to assume that an Australian naval force, supported by the Commonwealth and Dominion in proportion to population or shipping as the case might be, would probably be found to furnish the best guarantee for the protection of our ocean highways and shores.
A CANADIAN LABOR PRONOUNCEMENT.

The first annual convention of the Canadian Federation of Labor at Ottawa has adopted the general executive’s report in favor "of voluntary service in accordance with Canada’s militia system, and against a regular army. It also approved of a statement, that a naval policy, consistent with Canada’s necessities and resources, consisted in acting in harmony with other portions of the Empire, but preserving complete automony in the matter of control; furthermore, all warships or military equipment must, as far as possible, be built in Canada.
THE INDIAN ARMY. (Received. October 1, 11.45 p.m.) LONDON, October 1. A Simla correspondent states that measures are practically completed for includng the army in India within the scheme-of the Imperial General Staff.
