The profits of tlie North German Lloyds Company for the first half of the present year were due to increased receipts. The North American traffic for the current half-year shows an equally good development. The Ham-burg-American line has also done well. The profit for 1909 is estimated at 4 to 5 per cent. CANADA TAKING POSSESSION OF ARCTIC TERRITORY. LONDON, October 3. Captain Bernier, of the Government steamer Arctic, is taking formal possession of Banks’ Land and other Arctic lands for Canada. VICTORIAN TRADE. MELBOURNE, October 4. Victoria’s imports last year were valued at £27,197,000. A decrease of £1 2s 2d per head. The value of exports was £27,196,000, a decrease of £1 10s 9d per head. HORSE v. MOTOR. LONDON, October 3. Owing to the competition of taxicabs the voluntary introduction of a minimum fare of 6d a mile in the case of horse-drawn cabs in London promises to prove a success. SHAKESPEARE’S PROFITS. LONDON. October 3. Dr. Charles W. Wallace has discovered from the records of a lawsuit the fact that Shakespeare, as one of Hemming’s co-partners in the Globe and Rlackfriars Theatres, drew profits amounting to about £6OO per annum. General Baden-Powell has been created a Knight Commander of the Victorian Order, in recognition of his success in organising the Boy Scouts. SIR WILLIAM MACGREGOR. Sir William MacGregor attended Balmoral and kisesd hands upon his Queensland appointment. PRESIDENT TAFT’S ASSAILANT. NEW YORK, October 4. President Taft’s assailant is a youth named Arthur Wright, of respectable parentage, but weak-minded. The police state that he followed the President about through six cities. THE PACIFIQUERE-FLOATED. SYDNEY, October 4. The Pacifique has been re-floated. The vessel is apparently undamaged. SYDNEY EIGHT HOURS DEMONSTRATION. The Eight Hours procession and sports were highly successful, and were largely' attended. Fifty-seven unions participated, and made a brave show with banners and pictorial trade devices.
