QUARTERLY RETURNS. The following is the quarterly return of the business transacted at the Magistrate’s Court at Gisborne during the quarter ended September 30, as prepared by Air. J. Dawson, deputy clerk: Number of sittings presided over by the Alagistrate 61-, Justices of the Peace 16; total 77. CIVIL BUSINESS Number of cases heard by the Alagistrate 116, by Justices 42; total 158. Aggregate amount sued for £2465 4s; recovered £1545 os Sd. Applications heard in Court of Chambers 7; orders made (other than on judgment summons) 4; plaints entered 264~- distress warrants issued 10; judgment summonses issued 21; orders made on iudgment summonses 14; warrants of committal issued 2, executed 1 ; writs of arrest issued 0; summonses and other processes served within two miles 225; distress warrants issued within two miles 25, over two miles 14. Amount of civil fees paid in stamps f-2;OS 2s; licensing fees paid in stamps £3. Old age pensions: Granted 20, refused 0, pending 1. CRIAIINAL BUSINESS. Persons taken into custody, summoned or apprehended, SOS males and- 8 females; discharged for want of prosecution or evidence 16 males, dismissed on merits 2 males and 1 female; committed for trial or sentence 2 summarily convicted 188 males and i females; imprisonment in lieu of fine or surety 141 males and 2 females; peremptory imprisonment 13 males; bound over with or without surety 2 males and 4 females; released under First Offenders Probation Act 3 males; orders made 27 males and 1 female; convicted and discharged with caution 2 males. Amount of criminal fees paid in stamps £22 11s 6d, fines paid in stamps £B7 16s 6d; total £l2O Bs. RE AVENUE COLLECTED. The following is the statement of all fees, fines, and penalties payable to local bodies, collected during the quarter:—Borough Council: Cycling on footpath, 3 cases, £1 10s; driving without lights, 2 cases, £1; failure to register dogs, 1 case, 10s; pawnbroker’s license, 1 case, £lO ; total £l3. Cook County Council: AVlieel tyres by-law, 1 case, 10s.
