EAST COAST RAILWAY.

THE QUESTION OF ROUTE. Interviewed in Napier, after his overland journey, Air. Malcolm Ross, of AVellington, Special Commissioner of the East Coast Railway League said that lio had acquired a great deal of interesting; information about the country along the line of route, and, later on, he would be writing a series of articles on the subject. Speaking generally, he said, he was surprised at the great extent of pastoral country that would be tapped by the proposed failway, while th© productivity of the land was also greater than ho anticipated it would be, judging from the somewhat broken nature of the country. AVere there such a large area of fine pastoral country in the South Island, he is confident that long before this a railway would have been authorised to open it up. Mr. Ross added thgt Gisborne people now seem more inclined to favour the southern than the northern route, and recognise that it will be a vast benefit to Gisborne as well as Napier.
