Recently tlio Chinese Consul has been, in communication with the Customs authorities with a view to ascertaining if the lot of the Chinese sailor could, not be made a little easier in New Zealand. At present Chinese employed on board vessels trading to and from New Zealand are not allowed to land lest tliev should desert and evade the polltax'.
