THE WELLINGTON SUICIDE.

A verdict of death from injuries caused by a gunshot wound self-inflicted was returned as the result of an inquest on Mahiriee Matthews, who was found dead at Brooklyn yesterday. The wife of deceased gave evidence that as she was returning from a visit to friends she hoard a shot, and found her husband lying in bed, with the smoke of powder floating about the room. Deceased had been in ill-health, and she thought he had been dabbling in horse racing and suffered losses. AN OLD DIGGER DEAD. GORE, Oct. 6. An old man, James Bryson, better known as “Jimmy, the Packer,” about 75 years of age, was found dead in bed at Waikaia this morning. He was one of the fast-disappearing band of old diggers, and had resided there since the gold discovery. He had been in poor health for several years.
