A LOAN PROPOSAL CARRIED. nv,t Pr..;.3 Association.) PALMERSTON N.,. October 7. Palmerston North recently refused assent to a loan of £]o,ooo, proposed by the Municipal Council in connection with the waterworks for replacing two lines of 7-inch pipes with one of 15-inch to permit of a greater flow of water to the town, etc. The Council then proposed a £IOOO loan for the pipe portion of the scheme. This was carried to-day by 415 votes to 180, the loan to bo raised at 5 per cent. RAILWAY TRAFFIC RESUMED. WOODVILLE, Oct. 7. Before the big slip was cleared j n the Gorge this morning, another lot of earth came down a few' yards on the WoodviJle side. The line was made clear after five this afternoon, and the evening trains were able to pass over. THE PRISON GATE HOME. WELLINGTON. October 7. In response to representations by a deputation to-night, the City Council passed a resolution deprecating the proposal to establish a prison gate home at Island Bay, and recommending that it be removed to the country. It was decided that the Mayor and the Public Health Committee give the matter earnest consideration. AN INQUEST. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 7. An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of Jordan Milner, who wms killed by a fall ot earth at Andrew’s quarry on Tuesday. The district coroner,"Mr. T. A. Bailey, returned a verdict of “accidental death.” A SERIOUS CHARGE. GORE, October 7. At the Police Court to-day Michael Flanagan, an old man, was committed for trial on a charge of criminal assault on a girl not quite fifteen.
