NEW ALPINE MINE
(Special to “Times. ) GREYMOUTH, October 7. The New Alpine mine manager reports for the week ending otn inst.: “The north face in No. 14 level was extended 15 feet. The total north is 210 feet from crosscut. This should have been ore. but during tlie week we got blocked with mullock, when our winding arrangements were upset. The ground has been very hard, bad drilling and blasts very poorly. On the 2nd rest there was a small leader came into the face and lying ver v 'hat. It was the nicest looking stone I had seen in this level so far. li opened out to 15 inches on October Rli, but to-day only measured 12 inches. It shows fine gold in tlie dish prospects, and samples assayed show its /a*ue as about 14£dwts. The reef in tie stope is still very flat, both ;n the undothe and the strike. The reef here viJ average 4ft in width, and is good crushing dirt. One hundred and seventeen tons were sent- to the battery tor the week,, making a total of 282 tons. A RICH REEF STRUCK AT WAIPORI. . (Pick Press Association.! DUNEDIN. Oct- *- The Waipori correspondent of the “Evening Star” states that a wonderfully rich stone has been opened up m the Canton reef, adjoining tlie 0.1 vmine at Waipori] Three pounds weight of stone is estimated to yield trom to £4O worth of gold. The reef was prospected some rears ago and abandoned. The present prospecting iia - s been going on for about- three months. The reef is being developed by a syndicate composed of Waipori and Dunedin residents. Several rears ago the reel was opened up by a party of Chinese, who were unable to cope with the water and had to abandon it- in a spasmodic kind of wav has i*een cornea on now and again bv Europeans in attempts to develop the reef, but all coded m failure. Afcw months ago, however, Mr. Lewis Pearsall induced a tew others to join him to find funds to goo the reef a more systematic trial. * ' first shaft was sunk to a depth of otin. and then abandoned ; and the syndicate, who now hold the lease, sunk another 25ft.. and drove from that The reef, which has been eat. runs from lit to Ift 6in in width: and some of the stone is practically a mass, of PJW gold.
