THE IRISH LAND BILL

United Press Association— Copyright. LONDON, October 6.

In the House of Commons, Sir Gilbert Parker gave notice of a motion approving of the policy for the establishment of land banks, and urging the Government to appoint a select commi'itee to inquire into the working of land hanks and similar institutions in the colonies.

Lord Crewe, in the course of the Irish Land Bill debate, stated that many of the House of Lords’ amenoments to the financial clauses might be regarded by the House of Commons as a breach of privilege. They were willing to discuss these, but it would be unfortunate if they were sent down to tb© House.

Lord Lansdowne declared the discussion desirable, because many suggestions were not debated in the House of Commons owing to the use of the guillotine whenever the proposers thought it desirable to press them to a division on the matter.

Lord Milner did not admit that the House of Lords was precluded from amending'Bills because it might in some indirect way affect the exchequer. If the doctrine of privilege was pushed to that extent the House of Lords would be prevented from discussing many matters which it had been in the habit of discussing.

A COMPROMISE ON THE BUDGET BELIEVED POSSIBLE. (Received October 7, 9.35 p.m.) LONDON, October 7. In the House of Commons Mr. LloydGeorge, in reply to Mr. Balfour, announced that if the committee stages of the Finance Bill and third reading of the Development Bill were concluded this week, the House of Commons would adjourn until October 18th, to enable members to have full opportunity of considering amendments on the report stage of the Finance Bill, which would he placed on the order paper before the adjournment. Mr. A. Henderson (Labor member for Barnard Castle division of Durham) objected to the adjournment, and suggested proceeding with the Housing and Town-Planning Bill. Mr. T.loyd-George replied that he did not think the adjournment would prolong the session. It was quite necessary that there should be a week’s adjournment. The Government’s action, together with Mr. Asquith’s visit to Balmoral, is causing much speculation. Many members of the House of Commons believe that a Budget compromise in in the air.

INTERVIEW BETWEEN THE KING AND MR. ASQUITH.

(Received October 7, 10.40 p.m.) King Edward gave audience to Mr. Asquith yesterday. The House of Commons has finished the committee stage of the Budget. The House of Lords will meet next week to read the Housing and TownPlanning Bill a third time, and to conclude the debate on the second reading of the Irish Land Bill. The Liberal League has accepted Lord Rosebery’s resignation.
