BOWLING.
OPENING OF SEASON. The bowling season was opened at the Turanganui Club’s green yesterday afternoon. The weather was brilliantly fine, and there was a very large gathering of bowlers, acompanied by their jadv friends. Eight rinks were going all the afternoon, play starting shortly after 2 p.m. Soon after three o’clock those present assembled at the pavilion end of the green, where Mrs! W. D. Bruce, wife of the president of the Turanganui Club, formally opened the green bv throwing the jack. Prior to doing so, Mrs. Bruce said she was pleased to be there to congratulate the bowlers, but she would be even more so if she were declaring the green open for Short speeches were also delivered by Mr. W. D. Bruce. His Worship the Mayor, and Mr. W. Pettie, president of the Gisborne Bowling Club. Mr Brace made reference to the pleasure given to members by seeing so many ladies present. He was also ex-
tremoly pleased to see so many of his friends from the Gisborne Club present. The two clubs had met in many friendly contests, but the Gisborne Club had, in most instances, come out on top. This year they of the Turanganui Club hoped to improve their position. The Turanganui Ciub was only a young club—four years old—but in that time they had made great improvement, and now had a good green and a handsome pavilion. The Mayor said that all must join in congratulating the Turanganui Club on the most successful opening of the season, and also upon the large number of ladies present. It was a young and prosperous club, and a great deal of its success was due to the efforts of their first president, Mr. G. Matthcwson. The Club now had a most energetic president in Mr. Bruce, and the, secretary, Mr. Sheet, had also worked very hard. He was glad to soe the vicepresident of the club, Mr. Duncan Hepburn, about again after his accident, and he also took the opportunity of congratulating the Turanganui Tfiub upon the great improvements effected, and the satisfactory state of its finances. He hoped that by good management the Club would continue to prosper. On behalf of the Gisborne Club, Mr. W. Pet tie extended bis congratulations to the Turanganui Club on the successful opening, and thanked the Club for the kind invitation to members of his club. Like the other speakers, he was more than pleased to see so many ladies present, and he looked forward to further friendly competitions between the two clubs.
A telegram was received from the Hon. J. Carroll wishing the Club every success, and regretting the fact that he was himself unable to be present. During the afternoon Messrs Vita Br-os.’s orchestra played a number of choice selections, and after the speechmaking, afternoon tea was dispensed, Mesdames Nasmith, MeSkimming, Anderson, Birrell, and Misses Nasmith (2) and Bousfield assisting. Play, which consisted of a game between teams representing the President and VicePresident, was resumed, and after interesting games victory rested with the president by a margin of 36 points.
